Cover, estimates and applications
Marine war-risk insurance addresses specified war-related loss or damage to a vessel or cargo. The applicable policy wording defines the covered perils, insured interest, limits and exclusions. Terrorism, capture, seizure, detention and other exposures should not be assumed to be included without checking the wording.
Do not assume that a hull and machinery policy includes war risk. Check its exclusions and any separate war-risk cover with your insurer or broker before a proposed voyage.
War and strikes risks require a separate check of the cargo policy wording. Institute War Clauses (Cargo) and Institute Strikes Clauses (Cargo) are separate clauses; adding one does not automatically include the other. Confirm the clauses and transit period that apply to your cargo.
The Joint War Committee publishes areas it considers to present enhanced risks for marine hull war business. The list can change. Your policy determines any notification or agreement requirements; rates and terms are negotiated with individual underwriters. Check the current list and your policy before a voyage.
The calculator includes the Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb, Gulf of Aden, Black Sea and Gulf of Guinea. For another or a multi-corridor route, send the complete voyage for underwriting review. A listed location does not confirm availability of cover.
Check your policy’s trading limits, notification requirements and any conditions for entering the proposed area. Obtain the necessary agreement from your insurer or broker before entry. The effect of failing to comply depends on the policy terms and applicable law.
No. The result is an illustrative estimate, not a quotation or evidence of insurance. Underwriting must review the voyage and confirm the proposed premium and terms.
Hull concerns the vessel; cargo concerns the insured interest in the goods being transported. Crew-related cover concerns people and requires separate confirmation of its scope and availability. Do not assume one insured interest is included in another.
Tell underwriting about the crew exposure and cover you need. Availability, insured persons, benefits and terms require separate confirmation; crew-related cover is not automatically included in a hull or cargo estimate.
Raise the requirement with underwriting. Availability and terms need specific agreement and are not included in the website’s hull or cargo estimate.
Do not assume loss of hire is included in hull war-risk cover. Any requested extension must be specifically agreed and recorded in the policy wording and schedule.
Start with the vessel or cargo, insured values, complete route, intended dates and your contact details. Include the vessel name and IMO if known, loading and discharge ports, and supporting documents you have. Further particulars may be requested during review.
A formal quotation requires underwriting review. Check your request for updates and requests for further information. No fixed quotation turnaround is published for all enquiries.
Use the validity period and conditions stated in your quotation. If the voyage, dates or other particulars change, ask underwriting to confirm whether the terms remain available.
Vessel owners and operators, charterers, cargo owners and traders can submit an enquiry directly or through a broker. Eligibility and the insured interest require review.
Brokers can enquire about submitting business for clients. Appointment, portal access, commission arrangements and any authority are subject to review and agreement.
Sanctions-list checks support the review of vessel, party and voyage information. Additional information or compliance review may be required. An automated result is not a final decision on eligibility.
A possible name or identifier match requires review. You may be asked for further information to distinguish the parties involved. A screening result alone does not confirm or decline cover.
Follow emergency procedures and contact the appropriate maritime rescue or governmental authorities for a safety concern. Notify the insurer using the contacts and requirements in your policy. You can also record an incident on this website; it is not an emergency response service.
Include the policy reference if known, vessel and IMO, incident date and time, location, what happened and contact details. Provide reports, photographs, cargo records and other evidence when available. Do not delay the notification required by your policy while gathering documents.
The insurer of record, legal entity, applicable licence or authorisation, and any financial strength rating have not yet been published on this website. Capacity and the limit available for an individual voyage must be confirmed with underwriting. A verified capacity figure has not been published.
No. Insurance provides financial protection only for the risks and terms defined in the policy. Neither insurance nor passage coordination guarantees transit authorisation, protection from attack or safe arrival.
Industry references: Joint War Committee and Institute clauses. Your policy wording and agreed terms determine cover.
